What videos do Blink 182 parody in All the Small Things?

Blink 182’s All the Small Things video contains numerous references and parodies to other music videos. The artists targeted are the stars in the pop scene of that time. Did you recognize all the famous scenes? Let’s go and discover them.

The song All the Small Things by Blink 182

Let’s start with some details on the lyrics. The song All the Small Things was released as a single in 2000. The reference album is “Enema of the State”.

Blink-182 singer and guitarist Tom DeLonge wrote the song for his girlfriend Jennifer Jenkins (who later became his wife). In particular, the sentences “She left me roses by the stairs, Surprises let me know she cares” refer to an episode that really happened. The young woman left roses on the stairs and Tom found them on his way home from the recording studio late at night.

The band members composed the song “All the Small Things” last. In fact, they needed a catchy song, to launch on the radio. So they thought of doing a Ramones-style piece (one of Tom DeLonge’s favorite bands), inserting in the chorus “Na-na, na-na, na-na, na-na, na, na”.

This song thus became one of Blink’s biggest hits, thanks also to the accompanying music video. The director is Marcos Siega and the locations are Los Angeles Van Nuys Airport and Santa Monica State Beach. As we said at the beginning of this article, in the video there are references to other famous music videos of that time.

Parodies of famous bands in Blink 182’s All the Small Things video

1. Backstreet Boys – “I Want It That Way” | “Quit Playing Games”

I Want It That Way” is a 1999 Backstreet Boys single. Blink-182 parodied the scenes where the band gets off the plane, walks into the airport, dances in the lobby in white clothes, is cheered by crazed fans and finally gets on the plane with the giant sign “backstreet boys”.
Another Backstreet Boys video that Blink took their cue from is “Quit Playing Games”, where the band sings in the rain. The Blinks replaced the rain with a bus driver’s water pump.

2. 98 Degrees – “I Do (Cherish You)”

The 98 Degrees song that Blink-182 targeted is 1999’s “I Do (Cherish You)”, the soundtrack of the film Notting Hill. In reality, the 98 Degrees video is already a parody of themselves.

In fact, we see the members of the band flirting with the same girl, played by the actress Ali Landry. Each of them does not know that the young woman hangs out at the same time with everyone. Each member of the band offers her an engagement ring, which she readily accepts (maybe to resell it). At the end of the video the beautiful girl gets married… with another man! And the 98 Degrees remain dry-mouthed.

The scene shot by the Blinks is where Jeff Timmons rolls in the sand with Ali Landry. Travis of Blink rolls on the sand with a charming young lady. Where is the parody? At the end of the video, the girl cheers him in the crowd with a billboard that reads “Travis I’m pregnant”.

3. ‘N Sync – “Tearin’ Up My Heart”

The scenes parodied by the Blinks are where ‘N Sync in “Tearin’ Up My Heart” sing with their shirt unbuttoned and the wind blowing them. Blinks transform images by adding rotten or missing teeth and a public bathroom location with fluttering toilet paper.

4. Britney Spears – “Sometimes”

Blink drew a lot from the video “Sometimes”. In fact, we see the scenes of Britney spying on her beloved from a spyglass, the young man running on the beach with a dog, Britney Spears with the pink ball.

5. Christina Aguilera – “Genie in a Bottle”

The scene of “Genie in a Bottle” taken by Blink is that of Christina Aguilera lying on the sand among the flowers, in very sensual poses.

All the Small Things in movies and on TV

We conclude with a curiosity about the song All the Small Things. We find this song in the 2000 film Charlie’s Angels, in the animated series Alvin and the Chipmunks, in the 2002 film Clockstoppers and in the Simpsons in episode 11 of the 14th season.
